Students from Copenhagen inhabited the world's first floating solar-powered dormitory.

The project was created in a studio belonging to a Danish architectural company, Bjarke Ingels Group. Its designers came to the conclusion that large university centers in Europe are almost always located in cities near water. They thought that this should be taken advantage of and came up with the idea of a building on water intended for young singles. They had a particular group of people in mind -  students from the University of Copenhagen: active and very social.

The project came to life in the form of Urban Rigger - a picturesque floating building with twelve independent apartments consisting of a small bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. The common areas had scenic terraces and patios, with areas for barbecuing, partying or just relaxing outdoors. In addition, there is no shortage of storage space for bicycles and canoes. The latter can be used as a mean of transport, as you can easily get to every point of the city located by the water with a canoe or a boat. The floating dorm is created using environmentally friendly technology - it uses energy-saving pumps, and the entire installation works thanks to solar energy.

The building is located in the representative district of Copenhagen - Vesterbro, on the Nyhavn channel that crosses the city. Vesterbro was notorious in the nineties, and only tourists seeking adventures in the red light district, or dreaming about a classic sailor tattoo were seen in this part of the city. However, this changed when, in 1996, the city became the European Capital of Culture. Art exhibition venues, galleries, concert halls and clubs were created  in abandoned warehouses. Now, this district is home to fantastic cafes, shops and restaurants that offer a modern approach to nutrition and social relations.

The coast of living in the hip district, in the floating building, rages from 500 to 700 euros. No wonder that more than three thousand eager students competed fore a place.

The BIG Studio plans another Urban Rigger in Göteborg.
